Why Nepal Bans 26 Social Media Platforms?
The Nepal government said that the rules and regulations they had made were not being followed by these companies, due to which Nepal banned all these companies.
Very popular and useful apps like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Twitter, Youtube were also banned. According to the Nepal Government, these apps had not registered and were running in their country without registration.
According to these rules and regulations, companies had to follow some conditions such as –
They had to send their representative to Nepal.
They had to make an office in Nepal itself to handle user complaints etc.
But these 26 companies did not follow these rules, due to which Nepal stopped their access.
Genz Protest in Nepal
As we all know, today’s children are always stuck with their phones, they are used to opening their Instagram and WhatsApp every 10 minutes. Because of this ban, now they cannot use these apps, so to remove this ban they protested on Monday, 8 September 2025.
The matter is not only about a source of entertainment but also about education and business.
Nowadays everyone does their work through these apps, whether it is education or income source. Due to the ban, all the work has been disturbed.
Because of these apps being suddenly blocked, chaos spread in Nepal and people’s anger exploded and so they protested.
Protest Turn into Violence
Thousands of youth protested in front of the Parliament building in Kathmandu. At first, the protest was going on very peacefully but after the involvement of the police, it turned into violence.
The police used water cannons, tear gas etc. on the public.
In some places, bullets were also fired.
Due to this protest, around 20 people died and more than 100 were injured.
Government Reaction
Due to a lot of pressure on the government, they removed all the bans imposed.
To stop the violence from spreading more, they imposed curfew in some areas.
Because of the anger of the public, Nepal’s Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned.
The government had imposed these bans keeping in mind the safety of people. Nowadays, so many scams are happening on social media, so they made some rules and regulations to avoid fraud or scams, but these companies did not follow them, that is why bans were imposed.
But suddenly banning such important apps did not prove to be right and such a big incident happened.
Nowadays, people do all their work through social media, and because of the sudden ban, all their work stopped and then their anger exploded. Now the government has removed all the bans. Apps are running now just like they used to before.
Oh my god
