Yes, heavy rainfall in Kolkata is spreading so much scare among people. This year’s rain has taken every corner of India into its grip. Today Kolkata woke up from sleep with an unexpected disaster where they only saw rain everywhere. Because of continuous rain throughout the night, flood came in Kolkata. More than half of the Kolkata city got drowned in water.
In Kolkata, Durga Puja is celebrated with great enthusiasm, but due to heavy rainfall and flood in Kolkata, this time even the Durga Puja pandals have been destroyed.

How did the flood come in Kolkata?
On 23rd September 2025, there was very heavy rain in Kolkata and even before this, many areas had been receiving rainfall for weeks. But that night the rain left no gap, due to which the streets of Kolkata got filled with water and flood came.
In many areas of Kolkata, rainfall broke all records. According to reports, in Garia Kamdahari 332 mm water was recorded within a few hours.
In Jodhpur Park 285 mm, in Kalighat 280 mm, in Topdia 275 mm, and in Ballygunge 264 mm of water was recorded.
Disaster of rain
Because of heavy rainfall in Kolkata, the water on the road rose to such a height that a person could drown.
Buses and cars, all transport, stopped and got stuck on the roads.
In South and Central Kolkata, flood entered people’s houses, and many properties were destroyed.
Durga Puja pandals in Kolkata were all destroyed, poles uprooted, and all the decorations ruined.
Deaths due to heavy rainfall
Because of flood and heavy rainfall in Kolkata, till now 8–9 people have died. Due to strong winds, electric wires broke which caused more damage and risk to life.
The houses which were built on the lower sides got drowned in the flood, all were destroyed. People lost their houses and had to leave their homes.
Not only this, but metro lines and train tracks were also filled with water everywhere. All trains and metros got canceled.
Along with this, flights were also affected. Around 31 flights have been canceled.
Schools and colleges have been closed for some days and puja committees have also been stopped.
Government statement
The West Bengal government had already declared holidays in schools and colleges two days before Durga Puja, and private schools and colleges were also ordered to be closed or postponed.
Kolkata’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called the rainfall unpredictable and criticized CESC for the power failure.
The municipal party ordered to remove water from roads and waterlogged tracks. With vans and pumps, the emergency team is working to remove water.
In some areas, electricity supply is still stopped so that more damage and danger can be avoided.
The IMD said that there are less chances of rain stopping in Kolkata now, and also predicted heavy rainfall in South Bengal districts.
What’s the current situation in Kolkata?
Municipal workers are trying hard to remove water, but because of the flood, there is still a lot of water on the roads. Footpaths are unusable.
People are going out only when it is very urgent. They are advised not to step out of their homes.
Metro stations like Shahid Khudiram to Maidan have been suspended for some days. Trains have also been stopped for some time.
Not only transport but flights are also being canceled. People are facing a lot of difficulties.
Puja pandal organizations are trying their best to save their pandals and rebuild them so that they can still celebrate Maa Durga’s festival.
Emergency services are working to drain water and help people.
Political Response
CM Mamata Banerjee blamed CESC for electrocution. She also criticized the inadequate dredging and maintenance of the Farakka Barrage.
The opposition party is directly attacking the state government, blaming poor infrastructure and corruption in the municipal corporation.
The state government has called these allegations baseless and said that it was an unpredictable situation, but they are working on solutions.
What to expect next in Kolkata?
The IMD has said that there are very less chances of rain stopping soon. There is prediction of more heavy rainfall in low pressure areas.
After this prediction, the government has advised people to take care of themselves and stay at home as much as possible.
Durga Puja is celebrated as a big festival in Kolkata, but this year rain has completely ruined the celebrations.
Because of rainfall, many lives have been lost, many people have become homeless. Some people left their houses for safety.
This year the rain has created havoc all over India. Countless lives have been lost, many people lost their homes, and their properties have been damaged.
But the government is trying its best to bring everything back to normal, so that people can again celebrate Durga Puja and live their lives normally.
