Meerut’s Central Market was a very famous place where people used to go shopping. The Central Market located in Shastri Nagar, Meerut, was demolished on 26 October 2025.
This Central Market of Meerut had been built for many years. It was mostly a commercial hub where thousands of people used to earn their living. But it is said that the shops built there were illegal, and because of this, the Supreme Court ordered all those shops to be demolished.
On 26 October, under the order of the Supreme Court, bulldozers rolled into Central Market, and all the illegal shops were demolished.

Let’s Know About Meerut Central Market
The Central Market of Shastri Nagar is located on Plot No. 661/6, which was allotted for residential use. But in the past few years, somehow 22 commercial shops and several small complexes were built in that area.
Central Market is considered the most popular area in Meerut. Here you can find everything such as clothes, electronics, jewelry, and food stalls. Thousands of people visit daily, which made the shopkeepers’ income quite good.
But most of the shops and complexes in this market were declared illegal, and that’s why the Supreme Court had to order their removal.
How the Matter Started?
Central Market has been built in Shastri Nagar for the last 20 years, but some time ago, local residents filed a complaint that this market was illegal. They said it was a residential area, and building commercial hubs there was illegal.
When this complaint was filed, the Meerut Development Authority (MDA) found that the plot actually belonged to a residential area and had never been changed to a commercial one.
The Allahabad High Court first gave the order to demolish this area, but the traders appealed in the Supreme Court to save their shops.
After many hearings, the Supreme Court also gave a similar judgment as the High Court, saying that no illegal construction can be allowed, no matter how old it is — it must be removed.
The Supreme Court gave the Meerut Administration three months to clear all properties. In October, this order was executed, and all the shops of Central Market were demolished.
The Demolition Day
On 26 October 2025, bulldozers were brought to the Meerut Central Market early in the morning with police force. Seeing such a large number of police officers, everyone was shocked and gathered there.
The traders tried to stop the police from doing their work so that they would not demolish their shops. But the police had to follow the court’s order.
Seeing their shops being demolished, the traders started crying badly because it was their source of livelihood that they had been running for many years. Watching their hard work being destroyed in a moment made everyone deeply sad.
According to sources, 40% of the area has been demolished, and the remaining part will be demolished in the next phase. Until then, it has been sealed.
Reactions of Shopkeepers
- Some traders couldn’t bear to see their shops being broken and fainted.
- Some women and traders started protesting on the road.
- Many people said they had taken loans to build their shops, and some were running their shops on rent.
Because of the demolition of Meerut Central Market, many people’s homes have been destroyed. Their only source of income is gone, and this demolition has caused great loss. The traders are very angry. They said that they had been running their businesses for more than 30 years, and the government ruined everything.
They said the government demolished their shops and didn’t give them any compensation or alternate place to restart their work.
One shopkeeper said,
“We are not criminals; we were just earning money to live. If this was illegal, then why was the government silent for so many years?”
Local citizens said that this was the right decision — removing illegal constructions was the best option.
However, some people called the incident inhuman, saying that the government should not have done this in such a way.
Administration Statement
The Meerut Development Authority said that the Central Market of Shastri Nagar, Meerut, was demolished due to the order of the Supreme Court. And it is true that the land was being run illegally. Central Market was a residential area that was converted into a commercial area, which was wrong.
This residential area was turned into a commercial zone without any permission. Shops were built, and complexes were constructed.
We had given warnings earlier too, but no one listened to us.
No one can work at such a place without permission. If they had taken permission, everything could have been done legally, but for so many years, people were running their shops illegally, so this action became necessary.
Conclusion
Many people have been affected by this demolition.
More than 100 families used to earn their livelihood from the Central Market. When they saw their shops being demolished, they cried and appealed not to destroy them — but who can stop a court order?
Now all of them are struggling to build their shops elsewhere. The government demolished their shops but didn’t provide any new land to rebuild, which somewhere feels wrong.
In recent years, Uttar Pradesh has been taking strict action against illegal constructions.
For now, only half of the demolition work has been completed, and the rest will be done in the next phase. Until then, no work is allowed in that area, and it has been sealed.
