In India GST was brought in 2017 by government. And GST was applied on everything. But before GST came, cars had many different types of taxes like Excise duty, VAT, Octroi, road tax etc. But after GST came these all taxes were removed and GST took place of all these taxes.

In 2017 government made 4 slabs of GST – 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%. But on cars now only 2 slabs are there 18% and 40%.
Small cars GST reduced from 28% to 18% and luxurious cars became 40%.
