Nepal’s government has recently banned 26 popular social media platforms. Nepal bans Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp and many other apps. These are the apps without which people today cannot even think of living.
Facebook, YouTube are such platforms where people spend hours and hours of their time. And Nepal has banned them. Nepal imposed this ban on 4 September 2025.
Why Nepal Bans Instagram, Facebook and Other Apps?
Let us understand why Nepal has banned these popular apps.
Nepal government says that these apps have not followed the government system. These apps were not registered. And illegally these apps were running in Nepal.
Nepal government believes that if these apps want to run there, they will have to follow their rules and regulations. And until these apps register with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MOCIT), this ban will not be removed.
Registration T & C
- The company will have to send a representative to Nepal.
- These companies will have to open a legal office in Nepal.
- These companies will have to provide such a system where Nepal users can easily file their complaint.
These are some rules made by Nepal for social media companies. But these apps did not follow these rules, that is why Nepal banned these companies.
Some Apps Are Still Available
Nepal has only banned 26 social media apps. Other apps are still accessible there like:
TikTok
Viber
We Talk
Mibuzz
Poppo Love
And many such apps are still being used in Nepal. These companies followed all the rules and regulations of Nepal and registered themselves, that is why these apps are running in Nepal.
Government Clarification
Nepal’s minister Prithvi Subba Gurung says that this decision was necessary. He cannot let Nepal’s people use such apps which do not follow government rules.
This ban has been imposed to save the citizens of Nepal from security issues and scams. If these companies follow all rules and get registered, then the ban will be removed.
Public Reaction
The people of Nepal are a little upset with this decision of their government. They say social media is not only for fun but also necessary for many other things.
People do marketing of their business on social media platforms.
Students study from platforms like YouTube.
Families stay in touch with each other.
But now none of this will be possible. That is why the public of Nepal is not happy with this decision.
But the government has said that if these apps follow all the rules and regulations and register, then the government will unban these companies.
